CXMT’s IPO underscores China’s accelerating DRAM ambitions as capacity expansion, technology advances, and AI reshape memory markets.
ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), a decade after its inception in Hefei, China, is ready for a major corporate milestone: an IPO, expected to be one of the biggest in China’s business history. CXMT, now the world’s fourth-largest memory chipmaker—following Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron—has listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange after raising nearly $8.6 billion in the pre-IPO phase.
Two news bytes have startled the semiconductor industry in CXMT’s pre-IPO days. First, industry reports suggest that CXMT has charged more than Samsung’s roughly $1,240-per-unit price for comparable 64-gigabyte DDR5 server memory modules. Second, CXMT evicted SiCarrier engineers from its cleanroom after the DRAM price-related issues with Huawei. SiCarrier, a chipmaking equipment vendor, has deep strategic ties with Huawei.
Then, there are market projections suggesting that CXMT is on track to overtake Micron in memory wafer capacity by 2030. China’s largest DRAM producer, after completion of two new fabs in Hefei and Shanghai, is projected to produce nearly 350,000 DRAM wafers per month, which is in the crosshairs of Micron’s capacity of 375,000 DRAM wafers per month.
It’s pretty ironic that Apple, eying CXMT’s memory chips for its products sold within China, is lobbying the U.S. Government to undo the trade restrictions on the Chinese memory chipmaker. On the other hand, Micron is pushing U.S. lawmakers to enact further restrictions on CXMT and other leading Chinese memory chipmaker Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp. (YMTC).
That shows how China’s memory chipmakers—long seen as cheaper alternatives to the U.S. and South Korean products—are benefiting from a brutal memory upcycle in which AI servers, cloud data centers, smartphones, and PCs compete for DRAM supply. Just five years ago, CXMT had essentially zero presence in the global DRAM market. According to a Reuters story, CXMT held about 7.7% of the global DRAM market in 2025.
CXMT’s DRAM leap of faith
CXMT began producing DDR5 memory in 2025 and, despite lacking cutting-edge lithography machines, pressed ahead using older deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography tools and multi-patterning techniques to work around the lack of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology. CXMT was barred from acquiring ASML’s EUV lithography tools due to export restrictions in 2019.

What matters most now is that CXMT can produce more DRAMs for memory-starved consumers and AI data centers. China’s largest memory producer doesn’t pose a serious threat to the memory industry’s big three—Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix—in advanced HBM sockets for now. But it could change the supply equation below the premium DRAM tier.
CXMT has global ambitions, despite U.S. export restrictions, given that it could potentially undercut memory prices by half. However, for now, it’s stretched to meet the local memory demand in China. And here, it’s being picky about clients while dictating prices. That’s also what led to a face-off with Huawei in recent days.
