Growing adoption of AI, electric vehicles and 5G is accelerating global demand for GaN substrate technologies.

The global gallium nitride (GaN) substrate market is projected to grow from $620 million in 2026 to $1.25 billion by 2032, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5%, according to a new report from MarketsandMarkets.

The research attributes the market’s growth to rising demand for high-performance semiconductor materials used in power electronics, RF communications and optoelectronics. Expanding deployments of electric vehicles (EVs), 5G infrastructure, renewable energy systems and AI data centers are expected to drive adoption of GaN substrates over the forecast period.

Advances in crystal growth, epitaxial processes and larger wafer manufacturing are also improving substrate quality, production efficiency and scalability, while government initiatives supporting domestic semiconductor manufacturing continue to boost long-term market prospects.

Among substrate technologies, GaN-on-silicon carbide (GaN-on-SiC) accounted for the largest market share at 43.9% in 2025. The 8-inch wafer segment is forecast to record the fastest growth, with a CAGR of 44.2% through 2032, reflecting the industry’s shift toward larger wafer sizes for higher-volume manufacturing.

By application, power devices are expected to post the highest CAGR of 24.2%, driven by increasing use of GaN semiconductors in EVs, renewable energy systems, industrial power supplies and AI data centers. Compared with conventional silicon devices, GaN power devices offer higher switching frequencies, lower power losses and improved energy efficiency.

The integrated circuits (ICs) segment is also projected to experience strong growth, while n-type GaN substrates are expected to remain the dominant doping technology during the forecast period.

Telecommunications is forecast to remain the largest end-use segment in 2026, supported by continued global deployment of 5G networks and growing demand for high-frequency RF components, including base stations, satellite communications equipment and aerospace and defense systems.

Regionally, Asia-Pacific is expected to register the fastest growth through 2032, supported by expanding semiconductor manufacturing capacity and increasing investment in advanced electronics. North America is projected to remain the second-largest regional market, benefiting from strong semiconductor R&D, government-backed chip manufacturing initiatives and growing adoption of GaN technologies across AI infrastructure, aerospace, telecommunications and industrial applications.
